A sun tunnel, also called a tubular skylight, is a smaller, more affordable alternative to a traditional skylight. A reflective tube channels natural light from a small roof-mounted dome down into an interior room through a ceiling diffuser. Unlike a traditional skylight, a sun tunnel doesn’t require significant structural framing or interior finish work, which makes it a faster and less invasive installation.
Central Texas gets enough direct sun exposure year-round that even a smaller sun tunnel diameter delivers strong light output into interior rooms. The flashing and dome materials are subject to the same UV and hail exposure as any other roof penetration, which is why correct installation and quality components matter as much here as they do on a full skylight.
Hallways, bathrooms, closets, and other interior rooms without exterior walls rarely get natural light. A full skylight is often oversized and overpriced for what these spaces need. A sun tunnel delivers meaningful natural light into a small or windowless room without the cost and structural scope of a traditional skylight installation.
